We are seeking a seasoned Chief Accountant to join the growing Cyprus hub of an international firm supporting small to medium-sized businesses in the construction industry. This on-site role in Nicosia is ideal for a finance professional with strong leadership experience, ready to take ownership of the financial reporting function and lead a high-performing team.
As Chief Accountant, you will play a critical role in overseeing financial operations, ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of reports, and driving continuous improvement in processes and internal controls. You will manage a team comprising financial accountants, cost controllers, and revenue controllers, while closely collaborating with the CFO and departmental leadership to align financial strategies with business objectives.
Job Description
Team Leadership & Management
- Lead hiring efforts for the finance department, ensuring team structure aligns with company goals and values.
- Manage a team of accountants, cost controllers, and revenue controllers, ensuring high performance and alignment with departmental KPIs.
- Identify skills gaps and implement training programs to upskill team members and enhance departmental capabilities.
- Foster a collaborative and accountable team environment through mentorship, performance management, and succession planning.
Financial Reporting Oversight
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of management accounts, statutory reports, and tax filings in compliance with relevant regulations.
- Conduct quality reviews of financial data and ensure reports meet internal and external standards.
- Oversee the end-to-end financial reporting process, coordinating across departments and signing off final reports.
System Optimisation & Process Improvement
- Collaborate with IT and other departments to continuously improve ERP system functionality.
- Identify and address process inefficiencies, standardizing workflows to streamline financial operations.
- Ensure effective system usage by the finance team and champion process innovations aligned with best practices.
Management of Financial Operations
- Oversee report production and maintain visibility on deadlines and deliverables across the finance team.
- Promote a culture of accountability, providing feedback and addressing performance issues proactively.
- Liaise with department heads to ensure financial reports support operational and strategic decision-making.
Reporting & Compliance Oversight
- Ensure all financial reports comply with IFRS, local tax laws, and industry regulations.
- Enforce rigorous quality assurance processes and monitor compliance with reporting timelines.
Strategic Financial Planning & Budgeting
- Support the CFO in financial strategy development and execution.
- Lead budget preparation, forecasting, and financial modeling in collaboration with key stakeholders.
Training & Knowledge Management
- Provide structured training and support to junior team members.
- Drive professional development initiatives and ensure the team remains current on reporting practices and tools.
Departmental Meetings & Performance Monitoring
- Lead regular finance team meetings to review performance and align on goals.
- Track team performance and report progress, risks, and deliverables to the CFO, offering guidance for continuous improvement.
Your Profile
- ACA/ACCA qualified
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business (Postgraduate qualifications a plus)
- 10+ years experience in accounting or finance role with 4+ years in management position.
- Industry experience
- Experience with IT systems in terms of automation.
- Deep knowledge of IFRS and VAT regulations
- Excellent skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint)
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills
- Fluent in English (written and spoken)
- Strong leadership and strategic thinking abilities
- High level of integrity and commitment to confidentiality
